JUST six staff are likely to be based at West Devon Borough Council?s proposed new Okehampton office and information centre at any one time. The council is aiming to use information technology to give visitors access to the information they need about the council?s services. The ultimate aim of the council is to use technology to create a ?paperless office.? The council?s planning committee this week granted consent for change of use to turn 10 St James Street into an information centre. The currently vacant premises ?the first in a row of three immediately to the south of the arcade ? was formerly a hairdressers. Last year, borough councillors agreed to close the Oaklands site in Okehampton and replace it with a new customer service centre based in the town centre. The council says it needs to concentrate most of its office facilities at Kilworthy Park in Tavistock, to ensure it provides the ?most cost-effective? service. At the policy and resources meeting to discuss the changes last November, councillors representing Okehampton and the surrounding area said it was essential that enough officers were based in Okehampton to maintain a good service to the public.
