THE Quaker Meeting in Okehampton has asked me to write on two matters now arising from the events in USA a fortnight ago.

First, reports of unkindness, rudeness or aggression towards Muslim people in this country sadden us very much, we wish to assure the Muslim families in our community of our friendship and support.

Second, we are gravely concerned by the threat of military action by the US as retaliation against those thought to be the instigators of the horrific attacks suffered by them.

Acts of terrorism on that scale must have their roots in deep hatred and fear. Why? This is what US and other Western governments have to address.

Our conviction is that violence in response to violence can only extend human suffering and increase hatred and fear.

There is provision under international law to bring to trial those thought to be responsible for terrorism.
