A TWO-lane grass running track planned for Bere Alston should be in place just in time for those New Year's resolutions.
Dotty King, club chair and head coach of Bere Alston Trekkers, has been working on a project to create a track in the village which everyone can enjoy.
She said that the track, earmarked the Bere Alston Recreation Field, would not be just for the BATs, but for everyone, from dog walkers to parents with prams, and beginners who just want to try running.
The track will have distance maRkers, will be cut regularly, and lined, litter picked, and prepared and maintained all by members of BATs.
Dotty is hoping to bid for section 106 funding from West Devon Borough Council to assist the project, which is estimated to cost as little as £500.
This figure will contribute to the initial work and help with drainage and signage.
Mrs King said the track would fit with the club's ethos of community running and the Governoment's localism act.
'This is about communities taking responsibilities for themselves,' she said.
'It is hoped that doctors from the local surgery could refer residents who would benefit from increased physical activity to the facility.
'This will mean residents can do something active without the need to travel further afield, using expensive equipment or paying for the use of other facilities.
'This would be particularly useful for those recovering from illness and those with mental health issues.
'Although the track will be available for club members, it is primarily for those members of the community who want to give running a go and run in their own time to help build confidence.'
The idea to create a two lane grass running track has been supported by Bere Ferrers Parish Council.
Bere Ferrers Parish Council chairman Brian Lamb said: 'The parish council is delighted to support Dot and her community on such a worthwhile scheme.'
It is hoped that the track will be ready in the New Year.
