A LABRADOR-cross puppy, sponsored by residents in Lifton, is well on his way to becoming a Medical Detection Dog.

The nine-month-old puppy, named Lifton, has recently completed level three of his initial training and has therefore graduated.

Training involved at level three included walking on a loose lead, walking off the lead in a controlled manner, off the lead two minute-down-stay, recall past people and dogs, informal retrieve, sendaway to a cone, distance-down, door manners, getting in and out of the car in a controlled manner and settling in class.

Puppy socialiser for Medical Detection Dogs Sally said in a update to residents: 'Lifton really enjoys training, and he is very good at trying to work out what it is you would like him to do.

'Generally he is very well behaved on walks, taking an interest in the great outdoors, but always coming when called.

'He is quite confident and takes most things in his stride.'

Lifton is now looking forward to receiving his Medical Alert Assistance Dog in Training coat so that he can start to go onto public transport and into places where most other dogs are not allowed access.

Tim Sutton-Woodhouse, who lives in Lifton and is a volunteer for Medical Detection Dogs, organised the fundraising to support the puppy in his training.

Tim said: 'We are pleased to hear that puppy Lifton is doing very well in socialising and training and hope as he moves onto formal Medical Alert training, he continues his progress.

'Once in work he will undoubtedly transform and maybe save lives — all because of the amazing natural ability to detect tiny amounts of odour as our body chemistry changes slightly.

'It's early years for the charity and there's a huge challenge ahead to even start to fulfill the needs of so many people.

'Thanks to the support of the public — especially the residents in and around Lifton and Tinhay.

'We have puppy Lifton's reports in the local pubs and village notice boards and are regularly building interest.

'We hope soon to have Lifton Primary School on board with their fantastic enthusiasm.'
