SATURDAY will see the launch of the new village community markets in Walkhampton. The village shop closed three years ago, leaving the community without a retail centre. The committee of Walkhampton Memorial Hall decided to establish a village market on Saturday mornings in an effort to provide this and in response to a recent village survey. Research was carried out at other community markets, particularly the well-established venture at Bere Ferrers where the community came together to find a solution to a similar problem. Building on that model, the committee hopes to generate interest and the business necessary to ensure a regular market. As well as providing the opportunity to buy food such as meat, vegetables and bread and crafts from local suppliers and traders, there will be a morning coffee shop. Local and established traders can book tables at the event or advertise at the traders' table. The market will be open from 10am to noon every Saturday, apart from when the hall has been booked for special private events such as weddings.
