BERE Alston's Victorian Evening was a success despite heavy rain, which did not succeed in dampening people's spirits.

The children's fairground rides in Fore Street were a welcoming sight and queues formed early for Santa's grotto, which was organised by a local estate agency.

Children in Victorian costume tried out the striker, bran tub and free festive treats.

The twilight bazaar in the parish hall and stalls in the barn were packed.

Local groups, including the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, the Bowling Club, Cabin Childcare Centre and the Parish Regeneration Project, raised much-needed funds from their stalls.

There was a treasure hunt, tombola, Cameron's Victorian Emporium, displays of craftwork, presents, handmade cards, jewellery and edible gifts. Face painting and refreshments did a roaring trade.

Local handbell ringers and the Salvation Army entertained with festive flair.

Imaginative window displays contributed to the event, with John Brown's Dairy being voted the star attraction.

Lauren Morris and Aaron Kirby were chosen as the best dressed Victorian girl and boy by the chairman of the parish council, Cllr John Reddecliff, and parish clerk Mary Taylor. Wendy Kingwell won the adult class.

The event was organised by the Bere Alston Carnival Committee.
