A WEST Devon vicar will have a higher calling this weekend when he climbs to the top of Winkleigh Church tower to raise funds for the church. The Rev Peter Norman, Vicar of Winkleigh, will be joined by his wife, Helen, for a 12-hour sponsored sleepover in the church tower. Just before 8pm tomorrow night, (Friday) Peter and Helen will climb the narrow staircase to the top of the tower where they will settle down for a night in an area about 12-foot square. They will come back down to terra firma at 8am on Saturday. Peter said: ?We are hoping for a warm night and are trying to think of ways to make it as comfortable as possible.? Peter is not anxious about the sleepover, but he said Helen was a little less pleased about the idea, as she was ?not over keen on heights?. Around £400 has already been pledged in sponsorship, towards the total of £650 for an addition to the church. Peter said: ?There is a large screen in the church with a big wooden cross on top, and we thought it would be a good idea to put a figure of Christ on the cross.? Peter said the sleepover was the most unusual idea he had been involved in to raise funds for a church. ?Someone suggested we take a bottle of wine up there, so we have a proper night on the tiles,? he added.
