THE visitors' centre at Meldon Quarry has been closed after vandals smashed windows last month.
Extensive damage was caused when stones were thrown from the Granite Way cycle path. The incident took place between Wednesday, June 23 and Saturday, June 26.
Duty manager at Dartmoor Railway John Wills said: 'Because of the damage to the windows we've not been able to open the centre. We've had quite a run of damage out at Meldon Quarry in the past and it dramatically effects the railway.
'We rely so much on volunteers to restore and repaint the coaches and apart from the cost, it's so demoralising.
'The railway doesn't have unlimited resources and in the past when it's been graffitied, it has cost over £1,000 to remove it and then, of course, repaint it.'
Anyone who may have information on the incident is asked to phone Okehampton police on 01837 658400.
