A disabled toilet in Tavistock town centre was so severely damaged by vandals that it will cost more than £2,000 to repair. West Borough Council says the incident is just one of a number of senseless and costly attacks on toilets in the past year, which cause much distress ? particularly to the disabled. The vandals struck sometime between Friday night on October 18 and early the next morning at the toilets at the Bedford car park in Canal Road. Police are appealing for witnesses. PC Arnie Cockayne, of Tavistock Police, said this was not a case of casual vandalism because some brute force was needed to cause such damage. He suspects it was done by young men rather than children. He said: ?Handrails were ripped out and one has been stolen. A shelf was destroyed and the toilet wall badly damaged. ?Tiles were smashed and lay strewn all over the floor. It has caused considerable damage. The vandals have really gone to town.? The toilet?s tiles were especially installed as blue ones at the bottom of the predominantly white tiled wall acted as a visual guide to those who are partially sighted. All these will now have to be replaced. Anyone who has any information on the incident is asked to contact the town?s neighbourhood beat officer, PC Graham Callender at Tavistock police station on 08452 777444 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. West Devon Borough Council spokesperson Alison Stoneham said: ?The toilets at Bedford Car Park are badly vandalised around six to eight times a year. ?Smaller scale vandalism of toilets; ie toilet roll holders pulled off walls and toilet seats smashed, is, sadly, expected virtually every week. ?This incident is expected to cost around £2,000 to repair. Unfortunately, incidents of this kind happen with increasing regularity and the cost of such vandalism has to be borne by the West Devon Council tax payers.? The council hoped repairs to the toilets would be completed this week. l Tavistock Area Support Services, which offers valuable support for people in the area who are over 55 has had a spate of vandalism concerning its new disabled access. Vandals over the last month have damaged and removed the device that operates access to the Anchorage Centre for those with mobility problems due to age and disability. Andy Lyle, general manager of TASS, said: ?This is not just an act of sheer vandalism but an act which means people who would access the centre are either finding it difficult to enter, or for others they are unable to gain access at all. This is a cruel act against vulnerable people in our local society.? If anyone knows anything about these acts of vandalism please call Devon and Cornwall Police on 08452 777444 quoting criminal reference no JT\06\1438.
