THE future of the decorated Christmas tree on Yelverton roundabout is in doubt following vandalism. Buckland Monachorum Parish Council chairman Graham Osborn said the original idea for a tree came five years ago from a young parishioner. She had written to the council via the letters section of the Times, with the idea that the council should mark the season by decorating a tree with lights and placing it on the roundabout so it could be enjoyed by the local community, visitors and those travelling through. The council agreed with the idea and the following year the young person was invited to switch on the lights. Mr Osborn said: ?Each year the lights have shone brightly from early December until the end of the first week of January and have been enjoyed and appreciated.? But this year had been different, he said. Someone had deliberately smashed 30 bulbs on Chrismas Eve and after the arrival of snow on Christmas Day more bulbs disappeared, only to be found adorning local snowmen. Mr Osborn said: ?The council will now have to consider from a financial viewpoint whether it is worth continuing with the illuminated tree.? He suggested the individual or individuals concerned may like to write a letter of apology to the parish council. Anyone with any information concerning the vandalism is asked to contact PC Bone at Tavistock Police Station.
