AN extra care scheme has given one Okehampton couple the best Valentine's present they could hope for — the ability to stay together.
Ruth and Brian Solomon, who have been married for 25 years, recently moved into Castle Ham Lodge, an extra care scheme managed by the Guinness Partnership, after Ruth was unable to care for Brian at their bungalow in Okehampton.
Ruth, who is 72, said: 'Brian suffers from Parkinson's and I was becoming exhausted trying to look after him. I was really worried that he would have to go into a care home, which neither of us wanted as we really wanted to stay together.
'We could see this extra care scheme being built near our old home and when we were offered a place we were over the moon. We now have a lovely two-bedroom flat and Brian has the care he needs.
'I am able to go out with complete peace of mind that he is being cared for. The staff and manager here are wonderful and we are so happy.
'We are able to live independently in our own flat but have access to the help we need. It is such a relief to know we can stay together in this wonderful home.'
Castle Ham Lodge is a major redevelopment of the former Castle Hospital site in Okehampton and provides 50 purpose-built flats, as well as additional facilities for the community.
Scheme manager Debbie Mulcahy said: 'It is lovely to see Mr and Mrs Solomon so happy.'
The extra care scheme offers specialist care and support alongside independent living to people over 55. More information: 01837 659900 or at http://www.guinnesscareandsupport.org.uk">www.guinnesscareandsupport.org.uk
