A SEAT on Tavistock Town Council has become vacant, following the resignation of one of the council?s members.

Cllr David Stapleton informed the mayor of his intention to resign last week, on personal grounds.

Cllr Stapleton, a prominent member of Tavistock Liberal Democrats, had served on the town council for four years before his re-election in May. He represented the town?s North ward.

He has also served as a borough councillor.

Roger Howard, Tavistock?s town clerk, confirmed the resignation letter had been received and said notice of the vacancy would be published this week.

If ten or more members of the public demand an election in writing by August 1, one will be held during the autumn and by October 2 at the latest ? otherwise, the council can co-opt a new member ?within a reasonable time?.

Cllr Norma Woodcock, mayor of Tavistock, said Mr Stapleton had been a seasoned councillor who had given valuable years of experience to the authority.

?I am sorry that family circumstances have made it necessary for him to resign ? the council will now need to put in the necessary procedures to fill the vacancy,? said Cllr Woodcock.
