THE Highwayman Inn in Sourton has been rated as a top performing inn on the website TripAdvisor. The pub has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award. The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor. Establishments awarded the Certificate of Excellence are located all over the world and represent the upper echelon of businesses listed on the website. 'Winning the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence is a true source of pride for us at the Highwayman and we'd like to thank all of our past guests who took the time to complete a review on TripAdvisor,' said landlady Sally Thomson. 'There is no greater seal of approval than being recognised by one's customers. With the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence based on customer reviews, the accolade is a remarkable vote of confidence to our business and our continued commitment to maintaining this standard. 'We are considered Britain's most unusual inn too. An uniquely eclectic collection of curiosities and interesting architecture make this a great place to visit on Dartmoor.' The Highwayman is a treasure trove of curiosities and different styles with an entrance hall fashioned from an old horse-drawn coach. The pub was originally built as an inn in 1282 and later served as hostelry and farm, making use of the 20 acres of land to the rear. It was known as the New Inn then renamed the Golden Fleece in the 17th century before new owners Plymouth Breweries changed it back. Previous landlords Rita and Buster Jones took over in 1959 and it was Rita who dreamt up the current name after her romantic notions of highwaymen dashing about in the misty moor. The pub, which has become a much sought-after tourist attraction in the area, is also said to be haunted and offers a spookily-named Cobweb Hall.
