TAVISTOCK Squash Club finished the season with a clash against Newton Abbot 3.

First on was fifth string match between Peter Middleton (Tavistock) against Jerry Paris of Newton Abbot, Pete's first game of the season for Tavistock. They had a tight first game which Jerry won 10-8. In the second and third games Peter struggled to make any impression on the game with several unforced errors, making Jerry the outright winner 3-0.

Next on was Phil Goodman against Stuart Cox for Tavistock, this proved to be a titanic battle. Phil took the first game with relative ease as Stuart struggled to get any consistency into his game, 9-2. In the second and third games Stuart changed his tactics a little, playing some right reverse angles. Stuart took the games 9-5 and 9-7.

Phil looked like he was tiring but managed to slow the game down and pull himself back by winning the fourth game 9-4. This took the match into the fifth and deciding game, which Phil won 9-7 with fatal errors in the last two points of the match from Stuart.

With Tavistock facing defeat, next on was Tim Wallis (Tavistock) against Julian Amery. Julian took the first game with stylish play against the Tavistock number 3, 9-5. Julian, however, had expended a lot of energy and struggled to make any impression on the rest of the game with Tim taking the match 3 games to 1.

Next on was Kevin Smart against Tavistock's Colin Grice. Kevin was a strong number two for Newton Abbot and put Colin under a lot of pressure. Colin struggled to make any impression in any of the games eventually losing the match 3-0, thus giving Newton Abbot the tie.

Finally, the number 1 strings Tim Dickenson against Andy Gauler (Tavistock) were last on. Tim, a useful player for Newton Abbot, was able to return Andy's tight backhand drives with interest and therefore put Andy under pressure. After a hard fought first game, Tim won 10-8.

The second game continued in much the same vein with Andy struggling to cope with Tim's returns. Tim won the second game 10-9. The final game was a formality with Andy losing confidence, Tim won 9-4 and therefore took the match 3-0.

Newton Abbot beat Tavistock by 4 ties to 1, an unfortunate end to a season in which Tavistock had played particularly well.
