KELLY College swimmers can now take advantage of the superb new innovative starting block from Switzerland, which has now been installed at the college swimming pool.

Developed by Omega, the Swiss watchmakers responsible for time-keeping at world sports competitions, the innovation won the backing of FINA, global swimming's governing body, for use in official competitions. The blocks were first used in the Swimming World Championships in Rome in 2009.

The adjustable slanted footrest allows swimmers to use a crouch start with the rear-positioned leg at a 90-degree angle at the knee, generating an optimal starting profile — the power input a swimmer generates against the block from the starting signal to the time as they leaves the block.

Kelly Swimmers were excited to try the new block when it was installed last week. They reported it was 'fantastic, really improved my start' and said it would be great to practice using the new style blocks to prepare for major competitions.
