IN division 1 of the Okehampton and District Table Tennis League, Tavistock B were at home against club rivals Tavistock A. Fred Phillips was again on form, winning all his, seventh maximum of the season, to help the A side to an 8-2 win, ably supported by Peter Hicks and Roger Bowkett with two each. Stefano Ferrari saved the whitewash, winning two singles. With one match to go Tavistock A are the division 1 winners again this year, as their nearest rivals Okehampton A are 23 points behind. In the other division 1 match, Okehampton B were at home to Okehampton A in a hard fought match with five sets going to a fifth leg decider. In the first game, Andy Moppett took Barry Vaughan all the way, just losing out 11-13, 12-10, 11-9, 2-11, 5-11. In the next, Keith Smith lost out to Tony Howick 3-11, 12-10, 11-9, 4-11, 7-11 to put the A side two up. They won the next two before Andy Moppett beat Frank Cockburn, again in an exciting fifth leg game, to save the whitewash. Okehampton A went on to win 9-1. Barry Vaughan had another hard fought game to complete his seventh maximum against Karen Stephenson 13-11,11-6,7-11,14-16, 4-11. Tony Howick also completed a fine maximum. In division 2 Lewdown were at home to Moretonhampstead B. Lewdown raced into a 6-0 lead before Peter Denman saved the whitewash, beating Martin Rose in straight sets. Lewdown took the next three to win 9-1 and keep them at the top of the table. North Wyke moved up to second place after a convincing 10-0 win over Okehampton C. A strong team of Tom Misselbrook, Bruce Freeman and Jill Dilley against Maureen Venton, Lyn Cook and Iris Bostock were no match for North Wyke. Maureen Venton was off form as this was the first time this season she has not scored two or three singles. In the next division 2 match North Wyke were away to Moretonhampstead A. With only two matches going to a fifth leg decider North Wyke ran out 7-3 winners. Ken Underhill with a maximum saved Moretonhampstead from a whitewash. With two games in hand North Wyke are just 17 points behind league leaders Lewdown. It could be a tight finish to the season.
