MY thanks to Dave Weeks for his letter (February 13) about why UKIP is so anti-EU, rather anti-Europe. He has failed to convince yet again!
What about Brian Gillard?s letter (January 30) showing how some areas of the UK ?take money away? from England, a point that UKIP complain about with regard to the EU?
UKIP says our Parliament is more democratic. How is it so when you consider that Labour were voted in by a minority of the electorate and yet have a massive majority? What about the views of those people who choose not to vote Labour, UKIP?s included?
Mr Weeks fails to mention that the ?appointed? EU Commissioners he so dislikes are given their roles by elected politicians from National Parliaments. Yet another attempt to mislead the public about how the EU really works?
MEPs are voted for by proportional representation meaning they have to work with each other to reach common agreement. Just about everyone gets a say. Why is that less democratic?
Whilst some of the points Mr Weeks makes are valid, there?s an equal number of selective points I could make showing the opposite is true. Let?s face a real fact, the EU and UK Parliaments are neither better nor worse than each other and are quite simply different forms of democracy.
As I said in my last letter, UKIP seems as focused on spin and not substance as Labour.
I am beginning to think that UKIP really doesn?t know why it is anti-EU. Perhaps it?s just some involuntary twitch they get whenever the E word is mentioned, much like the involuntary twitches I get when I have an epileptic seizure?
