Tavistock/Newquay

U18s 60

Plymouth Albion U18s 17

WITH only three teams entered in the Cornwall sevens girls rugby tournament it was decided that two 30 minute games would be played by each team.

Tavistock/Newquay took the lead in the first game and stayed there. Alex Smith ran in five tries, Rachael Watson 2, Lauren Chenoweth 2 and Kelly (from Exeter), 1. Frankie Rickard converted three and Rachael two. Plymouth Albion had little reply to the aggressive running from the Tav/Newquay girls.

Exeter Saracens U18s 26

THIS was a closer affair with Saracens scoring first but with two tries apiece from Alex, Rachael and Alice Upcott and one each from Jo Abel, Tandy and Kezia from Plymouth Albion, Tavistock/Newquay took control. Despite tired legs and minor injuries held on to take the match and the tournament.

Player of the tournament went to Rachael Watson for her tireless running and consistent tackling when defending.

n This Sunday sees Tavistock/Newquay 18s's play at Exeter in the league.

n SEVEN-a-side girls' rugby is about speed and skill in the early rounds and stamina in the later rounds. Tavistock U15s narrowly lost their first match, against the home team and eventual winners, Newquay. However, the girls' stamina in the latter part of the tournament allowed them to claim second spot with three easy wins.

Newquay were fast out of the blocks out with their bigger forwards gaining possession allowing their backs to score twice from the first two plays. It was uphill from there, but Annabel Longden scored twice and Flo Rodgers darted through while Newquay scored two tries to give them the narrow win.

After a long break, Exeter Saracens were dispatched with five tries to one and Plymouth Albion left with a blank sheet.

Bronwyn Rundle together with Annabel Longden scored most tries while Lilly Hilson stopped the fast backs on the wing. One of the early mistakes was loss of possession. This was solved by the urgent foraging by Kim Upcott and Beth Hodgkiss in the later stages of the tournament.

After a successful day, Tavistock were delighted to be in second position with their young team.
