?SONGS from the Shows? will be performed at Fairplace Church, Okehampton and the Town Hall, Hatherleigh next week. The lighthearted programme will include numbers from ?The Music Man?, ?Miss Saigon?, ?The Student Prince? and items by Flanders and Swann as well as some Gilbert and Sullivan pieces. As in previous years, singers from the Watford area, Peterborough and Redruth will be joining local singers Roger Cleverdon and Brian Abell and, as usual, John Holland and Christine Cleverdon will provide the accompaniment. Proceeds from the Okehampton concert will be for the Fairplace Church organ fund and at Hatherleigh for the new community centre. The Okehampton concert is on Wednesday, September 7, and the Hatherleigh one on Thursday, September 8. Both performances start at 7.30pm and tickets priced at £4 are available at the door. l With the closure of the Rainbow Bookshop in Okehampton, the bookshop at Fairplace Church is aiming to meet the needs for Christian books for children and adults as well as cards and small gifts. The church bookshop, which is part of the Terry Bennett Centre, is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 10am to noon and on Thursday afternoons. There is a wide selection of items already in stock but orders may also be taken. The shop also has some Fairtrade goods for sale as well as the Traidcraft catalogue to look at. The Fairplace Church shop situated in the Arcade also sells a variety of goods for the home and is open six days a week from 9.30am to 4.30pm. l This month sees the range of autumn activities which cater for all ages begin again at Fairplace Church in Okehampton. The Sunday Club meets every Sunday at 10.30am with all children welcome to join the group for activities, stories and songs. The wives and friends group start their new season on Thursday, September 8, with a session led by Mrs Peggy Cooke from Exmouth. The League of Friendliness begins again on Tuesday, September 6, for a social hour with the Rev Philip Wagstaff with a chat over a cup of tea. The men?s forum choir also begins again on Thursdays in September. The harvest festival is on September 18, and the evening service will be a united one with all the other churches in the town. A united choir will lead the singing of all the harvest favourites.
