OKEHAMPTON Town Council is looking for two new councillors to reach its full complement.

The town council has 14 seats, but only 12 members. The vacancies can be filled by co-option.

Town mayor Cllr the Rev Mike Davies is encouraging anyone who might be interested in becoming a councillor to attend one of the council meetings held at the town hall on a Monday at 7pm and to sit and listen to the business discussed.

He said: 'Within the council there is a richness in the diversity of our members. It has to be said that we do not always agree with each other, but what we have in common is a heart and appreciation for Okehampton.

'If anyone is interested then I would encourage them to speak to me, or any of the existing councillors.'

The town council consists of the full council and four committees: planning, policy and resources, parks and property. Meetings are held most Monday evenings in the town hall. Councillors are expected to attend all full council meetings, of which there are around six a year. They are then chosen to sit on one or more of the committees. Members are entitled to attend all council meetings if they wish.

A list of the weekly meetings and supporting agenda is advertised on the council's notice board in the Arcade. Meetings are formal events, and open to the public so anyone can attend to ask a question, or just sit and listen to the workings of the council.

Anyone interested in applying to be a town councillor can pick up an information pack from Okehampton Town Hall. To find out more you can call the mayor on 01837 659841 or the town hall on 01837 53179.
