THE 200th anniversary of Nelson?s victory at Trafalgar was commemorated last week with a hearty breakfast. Organiser Derek Godfrey-Brown is shown about to tuck into the splendid meal being passed to him at the Plume of Feathers by landlord Nigel Knight. Trafalgar celebrations continued at South Down, Meldon on Friday with the lighting of a beacon. In the distance, other beacons could be seen linking the country in the moment of celebration and remembrance. Around 150 people were at Meldon for the lighting which took place at 7.18pm precisely. The beacon was built by the local young farmers? club. Other events to mark Trafalgar Weekend in Okehampton included a reconstruction of the battle itself using replica boats in Red Lion Yard, in conjunction with Wren Trust?s Baring Gould Festival. And bell ringers from Devon and Cornwall met at Okehampton Parish Church on Friday and rang 1,376 changes of the method Trafalgar Surprise Major in 54 minutes, celebrating the British victory 200 years ago. The ringers were Michael Brady, Joan Clark, Hilary Beresford, John Conduck, Louise James, Alison Waterson, Michael Rose and Ian Smith, who was the conductor.
