A FULL English breakfast will be the dish of the day at Okehampton's Charter Hall on Saturday when the mayor and chamber of trade team up to promote the pig industry and raise money for charity at the same time.
Christine Marsh is scheduled to hold her mayor's charities coffee morning on Saturday but has agreed to share the hall with the chamber of trade which is organising a pig meat promotion as part of the nationwide initiative, Farmhouse Breakfast Week.
So not only can you get coffee; bacon, sausages and the other components of the English breakfast will be on offer, ably cooked by Chef Graham Leedom, of Cherrybrook House, Gidleigh.
All the chamber asks is that a donation is made to the mayor's charities.
Derek Godfrey Brown from the chamber of trade said Britain was the only country abiding by EU welfare guidelines for pigs and it was counting the cost.
'Europe is being unfair and so is the Government for not insisting that the pig meat being imported is up to the same welfare standards as ours,' he said.
'It is a disastrous situation for pig farmers and the aim of this event is to support the purchase and consumption of local bacon, sausages and pork products.
'This meat is humanely produced and the taste and freshness dictates that it is of the highest quality available anywhere in the world.'
Cooking begins at 8.30am and leaflets will be given out encouraging people to eat British pork products.
Meat is being provided by Martins and Westmoor, of Okehampton, and Dartmoor Happy Hogs, of Whiddon Down.
