THE thrills, spills, success and excitement of London 2012 have gripped the nation. If you have seen a sport you like the look of, or been inspired by the action, now is the time to have a go and join the fun.
On Saturday, September 22, Tavistock Community Sports Centre will host 'Super Saturday' in partnership with West Devon Borough Council. The event aims to give people the opportunity to try lots of the different Olympic Sports and chat to local sports clubs about joining, training and all things Olympics.
Super Saturday is free and will run from 9am until 12.30pm. There will be a sports fair with lots of local clubs on hand to talk about their sports and how you can get involved. In addition, there will be a series of half hour taster sessions open to children, young people, adults and people with disabilities.
Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. The taster sessions will allow people to get a feel for the sport and see if they enjoy it.
Archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, endurance running, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, modern pentathlon, rowing, swimming, table tennis, Taekwondo, tennis, triathlon and weightlifting will all be represented.
Hannah Colston, the council's leisure and recreation officer, who set the wheels in motion for Super Saturday, said: 'London 2012 has been truly inspirational.
'There has been a lot of discussion about what the legacy will be and how long it will last.
'Here in West Devon we believe it is about creating opportunities for people to try different sports in an informal and fun environment.
'We hope Super Saturday will also give our sports clubs the chance to showcase what they're all about and how people can get involved.
'It can be very daunting to turn up to a hockey pitch, for example, on a dark night where everyone appears to know what they're doing!
'But the reality is our sports clubs are welcoming and inclusive to all. Super Saturday is all about having a go, even if you haven't done any sport for 20 years.'
