WOODSIDE Animal Welfare Trust, based near Plympton, has launched a Save & Spay scheme available to pet owners in the Tavistock area.

The trust has to care for a constant stream of unwanted dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs at its Elfordleigh sanctuary — many of them the result of accidental or ill considered matings.

Although the charity offers a low cost scheme to those in receipt of benefit or state pension, Woodside has now created Save & Spay to help all owners in its area.

£1 Save & Spay savings stamps and their collecting cards are available from all of its charity shops, including the one at North Street in Tavistock.

The stamps can be used for male or female neutering of dogs, cats and rabbits at Tavistock's  Westmoor and Drake veterinary surgeries plus another fourteen elsewhere.

Woodside Founder Carole Bowles said: 'We could do so much more for needy pets if only owners would stop theirs reproducing.

'This is now the annual kitten breeding season, and during last year's peak times we frequently had 90+ on site, and that's in addition to all the other animals we care for.

'At times we were overwhelmed and I can see it happening again this year.'
