THE official opening this week of the new swing bridge over Tavistock's canal has been postponed because several issues have not been resolved.
West Devon mayor Christine Grills was to have performed the honour on Tuesday but tarmac has yet to be laid on the footpath leading to the £112,000 bridge which now links Monksmead to the town.
There is also a
question mark over the new street lighting.
Malcolm Tester, communications manager of Devon and Cornwall Housing Association which was responsible for the construction, said the bridge could not be used until the footpath had been completed.
'The level of brightness of the new street lighting has also yet to be resolved,' he said.
Monksmead Residents' Association lobbied for a bridge to allow pedestrians to walk to Tavistock town centre using the canal towpath without having to use the main road.
The bridge and towpath now form part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
Mr Tester said he thought the official opening would take place towards the end of the month.
