STUDENTS of Okehampton College have swept the board at the Exeter and District Interschool Athletics Championship winning five out of the six trophies.

Successes came for the Girls' and Boys' Year Seven and Nine Teams and the Year Eight Girls' Team. The Boys' Year Eight Team came fourth.

Head of PE Ian Radnor said the students did 'extremely well'.

'A lot of hard work goes in to do well at this event but it had been about five years since we brought back this many trophies,' he said.

'Considering they were competing against some of the best schools in Exeter the students were delighted to win.'

Mr Radnor said at the moment there were some very good athletes in the school. Particular stars this year are South West shot-put champion David Dawson, 16, who is making his challenge for the national junior championship later this month and year eight's Amy Stephens who set a new record for hurdles at the Exeter event.

The PE head said it was quite possible that both students would go all the way to the Olympics.

Fourteen schools took part in the Exeter and district championships which included all track and field events.

Headteacher of Okehampton College, Philip Herriman, who travelled to Exeter to support the teams last Thursday, said the wins were a 'remarkable achievement.'

'We always do well at Exeter — we have done for years and my office is full of trophies but we have swept the board this year,' he said.

'It is a particular credit to the staff and the children who took part — there is a very good standard of athletics in the college.'

Mr Herriman added that some of the other competitions students were participating in this year were the Sheffield Junior Athletics Games and the Millennium Games in Salisbury.
