TAVISTOCK Girls took part in a triangular rugby competition at Cullompton on Sunday. They came away the winners by beating Cullompton and drawing with Bideford. Cullompton 10, Tavistock 24 Tavistock attacked from the start and scored their first try quickly when Robynne Honey broke through the Cullompton defence. Cullompton tried to use their superior strength to break down the girls but fine tackling and determined rucking kept them at bay. Cullompton did equalise on the half-time whistle when Tavistock were tiring. Straight from the kick-off Honey quickly put Tavistock into the lead again. Cullompton pushed hard and, after two attempted tries had been held up by prop Kirsty McCall, finally evened things up again. But Honey was soon on the break again and ran from the halfway line to score her third try, which she converted. The girls worked hard to retain the ball and cut out Cullompton breaks. Jenny Young, in her first game at full back, was inspiring and led many forays into the Cullompton half but it was hooker Paige McGechie who outran the opposition defence to place the ball between the posts. Honey converted. Forward of the match: Kirsty McCall. Back of the match: Robynne Honey. Tavistock 14, Bideford 14 Tavistock had a five-minute break then took on Bideford with tired legs. They struggled to keep pace with the fresh team and quickly went a try and conversion down. Jenny Young took the ball from her own half to score a try for Tavistock, which Robynne Honey converted. Captain Sarah Daymond had to push her exhausted girls to keep working hard and they held on to the draw until half-time. At the beginning of the second half Bideford?s pace and running caught out Tavistock again and they went ahead 14-7. Grit and determination were called for and with a great performance from the whole team Katherine Hair burst out of a maul to score in the dying seconds. Honey converted.
