A LATE second half fight-back helped Callington to a deserved victory over last season's league champions at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday.

It could have been different even as early as the third minute when Falmouth were awarded a penalty. With Wayne Wormald injured, Andy Brenton was enjoying his first start of the season but any rustiness did not show as he dived well to save from Luke Hodge's kick.

In fact the keeper was on hand throughout the game making a string of fine saves, but he could do nothing to stop the visitors taking the lead on 15 minutes.

With 25 minutes to go in the second period Geoff Battam's free kick was met by the tall defender Andy Treble who headed past the Falmouth keeper for the equaliser.

Shortly afterwards, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when, having made all three of their substitutions, Paul Wilmott was forced to leave the fray with a leg injury. Within two minutes Kevin Russell ran at the visitors' defence, drawing defenders to him, before playing the ball off for Gary Smith who struck from 18 yards to give Town the lead.

Then, with five minutes remaining, teenager Matt Hawke grabbed the decisive third with a crisp low shot to send the supporters home happy.

Following last week's excellent victory, Callington Town first team are at home again on Saturday when they entertain Penzance at Ginsters Marshfield Parc (kick-off 3pm). The visitors are in mid-table.

TOWN dominated the first period and went in at the break with a healthy 4-0 lead courtesy of goals from Chris Tilbury, Tony Truscott, Steve Brooks and Chris Truscott.

Early in the second half, Stuart Taylor added a fifth before Brooks completed an unusual hat-trick. First he fired home Callington's sixth before finding his own net for a consolation for the home side.

Mike Pooley headed Delabole's second before Chris Truscott and Lee Manual regained the six goal cushion late on to complete a decisive victory for Paul Blatchford's charges.

CALLINGTON Town third team gave the club another full sweep of victories by mirroring the seconds' result in North Cornwall.

St Teath proved useful opposition early on but some stout defending by the Town back line gave them a solid start and by half-time the attackers had done their job by giving Callington a 3-0 lead, with goals from Kevin Blatchford and Keiron Ruck (two).

The second period saw them pile on the pressure again against a still spirited home side.

Blatchford and Ruck completed their hat-tricks before the home side weighed in with two goals, but Lee Rider and an own goal with a Ruck assist completed the rout for Callington.

On Saturday the third team travel to Mary Tavy in the Duchy League division four east, kick-off 3pm.

Meet at Callington Cricket Club 1.30pm.
