TAVISTOCK based triathletes Pete Freedman and Harry Wiltshire took part in the Nokia Royal Windsor triathlon. The event is one of the country biggest triathlons and sees athletes swim 1500m in the Thames, bike 40k and run 10k around the historic town of Windsor in Berkshire. The elite wave attracts most of the country's top athletes racing for a prize purse of £10,000. Defending champion Richard Stannard led out the swim, closely followed by Harry, aged 25, with Pete, 23, from Yelverton, coming out of the water 40 seconds down. A strong bike led to a small group including Pete catching the front pack after 20k. This left the race with a front pack of seven athletes coming into the second transition together. A blistering transition enabled Stannard to develop a small lead which he steadily built up over the 3 lap run course to finish in a time of 1hr 53mins 39secs, beating his winning time of last year by over one minute. Pete, who has been a professional athlete for the past two years , put in a strong run to come home second, just 20 seconds down on Stannard with Wiltshire coming in a further ten seconds back to gain the last podium position. This was a great start to the season which both aim to continue in France this weekend in the French Grand Prix series. Pete from Yelverton, and Harry, who lives in Lamerton both do their swimming training at Kelly College and run with Tavistock Athletics club. The Nokia Royal Windsor Triathlon was broadcast on Channel 4 at 7.25am on June 29.
