Previously known as Devon Youth Games, this year's Devon Games to Inspire will take place on Sunday, July 5, hosted by North Devon District Council.

The games, sponsored by the RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport) project using Olympic legacy money, will tie in with the national lead-up to the 2012 London Olympics, with a focus on culture as well as the usual sporting events. The games bring together more than 1,000 young people from local authority areas across the county, and are an excellent arena for promoting community youth sport.

New for this year will be dance showcases and dance workshops. It is confirmed that several 'X Factor' performers will be in attendance, and an under 18 'Battle of the Bands' competition will take place, providing a live soundtrack for the street sports event.

Sports include the traditional, such as hockey and athletics, and the not so traditional such as tetrathlon (swim, run, cycle and row), and street sports.

Trials for all the sports are running from May 16 to June 1 in West Devon, and training will follow right up to the big day itself. Any children living in, or attending a school within the borough of West Devon, between the ages of 8 and 15 years are welcome to come along and have a go.

All information is available by visiting http://www.westdevon.gov.uk">www.westdevon.gov.uk, from local schools and leisure centres, or by contacting Hannah Colston, the sports development officer.
