THE world was a different place 50 years ago... In 1957 Harold MacMillan was serving as Prime Minister; Russia launched Sputnik one, the first earth-orbiting satellite, into space; Sir Walter Winterbottom was in charge of the England football team and a young Trevor Drew was about to ask Joan Mary Wright to be his wife. Now, 50 years later, Trevor and Joan are all set to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Friday, December 7. Trevor and Joan were born and grew up in Okehampton. They met when Joan was working as a shop assistant at Cole?s on Fore Street, Okehampton, and Trevor was stationed in Weymouth with the Royal Navy. Their son, Nick Drew, said: ?After many weekends commuting by motorbike home to Okehampton, local hops in the market hall on Saturday nights and draughty nights courting in the doorway of West Devon Farmers, the question finally was popped and they were married on December 7, 1957. ?They?ve lived all their lives in Okehampton with Dad working locally for SWEB. He then started the second biggest love of his life, with Okehampton Argyle FC. He did everything from playing, 37 years of bingo and marking the pitch. ?Mum has probably had 50 years of football herself, first with my Dad, then her son and now her grand-daughter who have all played football or are still playing!? ?I?d like to say congratulations Mum and Dad on your golden wedding anniversary and send you love from all the family for many more special years.?
