CONSTRUCTION of an outdoor activity centre at Gulworthy, which was granted planning permission earlier this month, will begin in March.

The eco-educational project, 'Tree Surfers', is expected to create six jobs and generate trade for the area as well as provide a stimulating activity for youngsters and outdoor enthusiasts within the Tavistock Woodlands Estate.

The nearest outdoor adventure centre of this type is near Exeter.

Milton Abbot-based outdoor instructors Paul Turner and Kate Blake, who are behind the scheme, said they were eager to start work. Each has 15 years' experience in the outdoor industry.

Kate said: 'This project has been close to our hearts and has been two years in the planning. We wanted to create an environment where youngsters can engage with the natural woodland and learn about the surrounding countryside.

'We will be creating a variety of stimulating activities that will provide an adrenaline boost and a sense of achievement at the end of it.'

Activities will include tree climbing, zip lining through the tree tops and simulated parachute drops.

Paul and Kate are keen to encourage schools to come along as well as families and corporate guests seeking a team building day out.

Natural England and the Tamar Valley AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) have supported the project. The centre is expected to open in May 2009.
