AN INVITATION to nominate trees in Tavistock which people feel should be protected by preservation orders has received a massive response.

The Tavistock Tree Preservation Group (TTPG) is considering 15 trees within the Conservation Area, some in and adjacent to the Plymouth Road Cemetery and an area to the south of the conservation area known to be an established breeding ground for buzzards.

Most trees in the conservation area already benefit from a degree of protection but the ones suggested, which are in the town centre and Plymouth Road, may be considered of outstanding and amenity value.

There are also requests to consider trees in Anderton Lane, at the Manor House and Peter Tavy.

Over the coming days and weeks the group will consider the nominations made so far and will apply in due course to West Devon Borough Council for tree preservation orders.

TTPG will also be making an urgent request for Tavistock?s most famous tree the Honour Oak in Whitchurch Road to be protected, after learning that it was not covered by any order.

The tree is vulnerable because of its age and condition and is due to be reduced to half its size in order to save it.
