THIS weekend could be a great opportunity to fill the freezer and stock up the larder ready for lazy, gourmet picnics once the summer returns. Two chefs will be joining Okehampton?s farmers? market on Saturday morning and between them will be offering all kinds of goodies to fill up a hamper. Many people in the area will already have heard of Jo Henderson from Okehampton?s Pickled Walnut café and restaurant. On Saturday, though, she will be offering shoppers the opportunity to buy some of her signature dishes as ready-made meals to take home and freeze, and some of her infamous cakes to sneak home and pretend they were home-made. She will be joined by chef David Sargent from ?Sargies? in Bude. His stall will offer the chance to buy a wide range of artisan breads, as well as meringues, cheesecakes, butters, and home-made pesto. The market will also have a new cheese stall this month, as Terri Rasmussen brings her Halloumi and ewes cheeses to the town. If the range of stalls at the market gets shoppers in the mood for picnics, they might want to enter the free competition which will be running to design the perfect picnic using ingredients from the market. The winner will receive a hamper filled with goodies. And for anyone who can?t wait until they get home to eat some of the treats they buy, then they will be able to take advantage of the market?s new lunch tables. Market organiser Linda Davis said: ?They mean that you can go around the market with a plate on a kind of food safari and then sit down to eat what you?ve chosen.? She is eager to keep the market growing and improving ? and she is also keen for Okehampton residents to support the farmers? market ? both by going this Saturday, and also by voting for it in this year?s Devon Life food awards. The market runs from 9am until 1pm on Saturday? to vote for it as ?best farmers? market? visit http://www.devonlife.co.uk">www.devonlife.co.uk
