A NUMBER of important transport schemes affecting West Devon will be on Devon County Council's agenda in the new year.

The county has been allocated £38.9-million by the Government to spend on transport over the next five years and its executive committee now has to decide how to distribute it.

Among principal issues the committee will consider is congestion on the roads into Plymouth, including those between Plymouth and Tavistock.

Studies on the A386 have been assessing whether re-opening the Bere Alston-Tavistock railway would help and whether it would be feasible to set up a park-and-ride facility. The committee could also look at improving bus services between Tavistock and Plymouth and the cycle route from North Devon through Tavistock to Plymouth.

All of these schemes are listed among the transport priorities the council will adopt in 2001-2006.
