TRANSPLANT patient and sportswoman Wendy Sincock from Spreyton has been invited to attend the Royal Garden Party on July 7 — and its all down to her mother Barbara Bridgewater.
Mrs Bridgewater wrote to the Queen to tell her about Wendy's achievements since receiving her kidney transplant, which include competing at ten British transplant games and four world transplant games — winning 68 medals in total.
Wendy's health suffered a setback last year when she had several heart attacks but she is back in action this year and competing again at the end of July in swimming, discus and canoeing events at the British Transplant Games in Coventry.
She has expressed thanks to her mother, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for the 'wonderful attention' she received, the donor families and fellow transplant games team members for writing letters of support to the palace.
She said: 'It's all a surprise to me. I feel very honoured to be invited to Buckingham Palace. What a highlight.'
Wendy is a member of the Exeter and District Transplant Team who will be supporting National Transplant Week with a cycle ride from Exeter Quay on July 4. It is hoped many more people will sign up on the organ donor register this week. There are currently 8,000 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant.
