Okehampton Columbines 3

Taw Valley 0

WHEN Columbines ladies' hockey team went down to ten after an injury early on, they knew they were going to have to work hard.

The defence held their line and Netty Collett and Debbie Pritchard had strong games in midfield. The forwards put Taw Valley's goal under pressure and it was two of Columbines' attacking players, Sue Stanbury and Jo Stephens, who shared the votes for player of the match.

The first goal was something Okehampton had been practising in training. A long ball from Sue Stanbury timed Viv Weatherington's run perfectly and she put Columbines one ahead.

The second goal did not come until the second half and was a lovely team move. The ball was played from deep to the base line where it was passed back to Kelly Cooper, who pushed it beyond the goalkeeper.

The third goal came from a classic corner to Sue Stanbury, who cleanly struck the back of the net.

Columbines this week play their first league game away at Plymouth.
