CAR parking charges at the picturesque new Tamar Trails are being reviewed.

West Devon Borough Council, which runs the car parks at Bedford Sawmills and Maddacleave, is planning to bring in a new £1 tariff for two hours' parking in addition to the existing £2 charge for parking all day at Bedford Sawmills car park.

Blue badge holders would be able to park for free at Bedford Sawmills, where they currently have to pay.

There is also a proposal to introduce a similar charging scheme at Maddacleave car park in the Tamar Valley.

Cllr Robert Oxborough, the council's community services committee chairman, said: 'Bringing in the new £1 tariff will make it more affordable for people who like to go on shorter walks or cycle rides in the area. I'm also delighted that we have taken into account the needs of people with disabilities or mobility problems by waiving their charges, as long as they are displaying their blue badge.'

The council is keen to hear the views of residents and visitors about the changes.

The income from both car parks is ring-fenced and can only be spent the maintenance and investment of the trails, and rental payments to landowners.

The 25km-long trails have been created as part of the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project and have opened up previously inaccessible sections of the trails for cyclists, horse riders and walkers.
