THE first draft of West Devon's community safety strategy has been unveiled following a crime and disorder audit in the borough.

The strategy has been drawn up by West Devon's community safety partnership — which includes the borough council, police, victim support and the fire and rescue service — following the recent questionnaire sent to 5,000 residents across the borough.

The 1,810 responses indicated that the principal crimes which concerned people included traffic issues, burglary and vehicle crime, youth issues, domestic violence, criminal damage, abandoned vehicles, bogus callers, dog fouling and violence and disorder.

Action teams will be set up to deal with the six main areas of concern, including drugs and alcohol.

The new strategy was unveiled on October 17 at Okehampton Community College before an invited audience of community representatives and is now open for public consultation.

The deadline for comments is Monday December 31 2001 and copies of the draft can be obtained from the council offices, libraries and police stations in Tavistock and Okehampton or accessed on the council website at http://www.westdevon.gov.uk">www.westdevon.gov.uk

Comments should go to Debbie Henderson, community safety officer, at the borough council offices in Tavistock or e-mailed to communitysafety@
