AN old tradition returned to South Zeal this Christmas much to the delight of the village's residents. The tradition of having a Christmas tree in the grounds of St Mary's Church, South Zeal has existed for many years, but for the past few years, the tree had been moved to a position down the road outside the Victory Hall. This move was accepted by villagers — but many commented that the atmosphere was never the same. However, after hard work by the South Zeal carnival committee and a logistical rethink, this year saw the tree return to the church grounds. A large gathering of residents filled the church, its grounds and the village lane around the church to sing carols together and hear the Christmas story. The Rev John Smart led the singing of the impromptu massed choir. Following the singing, the crowd retired to the village hall to enjoy mince-pies and mulled wine. South Zeal also celebrated the start of the New Year with the return of the hunt with crowds and visitors both enjoying a traditional English village scene.
