I WOULD like to respond to the front page article (January 27) ?Roadshow may roll into town?. Once again, the pannier market traders will have to remove themselves and their goods from the pannier market to make room for an event that ?will benefit the whole of the town?. I realise that the market building is the biggest area in Tavistock that is under cover. Moreover, it is central. But most of the traders in the market are there to make a living. We also have mortgages or rent, rates, gas, electric etc, just like shop owners/managers and workers. The difference is that we do not have the wherewithal to set up a shop, so we pay a daily/weekly/monthly rent. There are a few lock-ups in the market and they will get a slight rebate on their rent. No trader will be given anything towards loss of earnings. When the summer comes or the weeks leading up to Christmas, the pannier market will be open for a seven-day week. The traders who already work five days a week, will be expected to trade for the seven days. If you do not do so, and God only worked six days, you are branded ?unco-operative?. Mind you, if West Devon Borough Council keeps putting the parking charges up, Tavistock will soon be a ghost town and this letter will be superfluous. Mary Dombay A trader
