The semi-finals of the South West of England Winter Foursomes competition was played at Yelverton, on Sunday in testing conditions, bright sunlight, but a fierce easterly wind.
Ashley Moon (Okehampton) and his brother Martin (Yelverton), and previous winners of the competition, played Bigbury professional, Tracey Loveys, and her partner Amy McSweeney. The match was close in the first few holes, with neither pair settling-in to their game, but the men were one up after nine holes, won the 10th but lost 13 and 14 to go all-square.
On the 17th the girls the lead for the first time going up the 18th fairway. A good chip from Martin Moon put the pressure on Tracey to hole a five foot putt, which she sank the putt to win the match, and the professional's prize, the first lady professional to do so.
Paul Hendy and Mark Blaber (Yelverton) played some excellent golf to beat John Bristow and Roger Lobb (Yelverton) who were in receipt of 10 shots. Mark Blaber's excellent short game meant meant the match was sealed with a par on the 12th, for a 7 and 6 victory.
In the Plate semi-final A Bryant and T McEwen (Wrangaton) had a walk-over after their opponents failed to turn up.
In the other semi-final Mike Daniels and Dave Garry (Yelverton) beat Nick Davis and Dave Purnell (Yelverton). Davis and Purnell were five down, but managed to whittle away the lead to go all-square after 18 holes. On the 19th hole Mike Daniels holed an eight foot putt for par to secure the victory.
