A 'VALUABLE' youth hub established in January last year is set to continue, following a successful first 12 months.
The Tavistock and District Children and Young People's Hub was set up during a time of significant change in the funding of youth services from central and local government.
It was established to support leaders of any group in the Tavistock area, which provides services, activities or support for children and young people.
During its first year the hub provided an electronic mailing service for groups working with or supporting children and young people and facilitated three meetings, focused on fundraising, recruiting and retaining volunteers and safeguarding. It also offered networking opportunities for those who attended.
After the first successful year a review has taken place with a clear message from those involved that the hub provides a valuable service and support during changing and challenging times.
Peter Challiss, a member of the Tavistock and District Outdoor Education Forum, said: 'I used to attend the Local Youth Network (LYN), as it was good to meet other voluntary organisations, exchange views and talk about problems and fundraising.
'When Devon County Council withdrew the funding for the LYN, all was not lost as the Tavistock and District Children and Young People's Hub was set up.
'Small voluntary organisations need this type of help locally to be able to deliver their core products and support young people.'
Cath Gristy and Anne Johnson, with support from Exeter-based Mark Goodman and VOYC (Voluntary Organisations for Young People and Children), have agreed to continue providing the hub.
During 2015 it will organise three meetings focused on three key issues, which include looking at support for the running costs for the Tavistock Youth Café and health provision for young people in the Tavistock Area.
The first 2015 meeting will be held on Thursday, March 12 at the new Youth Café building in Pixon Lane, 4.30pm to 6.30pm.
Tavistock town councillors have been invited to attend to offer them the opportunity to consult with young people on current key issues.
Anyone interest in attending the meeting is welcome and should email Anne Johnson at [email protected]">[email protected] to secure a place.
