HAVING spent some time last week going into or passing through Tavistock town centre, I have been horrified at the volume of traffic that goes through Bedford Square.
I know that a lot of time has been given in the paper, and of course elsewhere, on the pros and cons of the so-called enhancement of Bedford Square.
We have been told that West Devon Borough Council carried out a traffic survey to determine the effect of reducing the square traffic to one lane each way, but they surely must have got their sums wrong.
In my visits to the town or just passing through every road leading into Bedford Square is already queued up with traffic.
Even when the workmen leave we shall still have only one row of traffic moving in each direction. When they reduce the traffic outside the Post Office to one lane each way, Heaven help us!
I realise that is is now too late to get the situation reversed and we who live in the borough are just going to have to put up with it.
But what happens when the visitors arrive? The town will be gridlocked. All those exhausts pumping out harmful fumes to people and environment alike does not bear thinking about.

THE taxi drivers having to park in the Plymouth Road, by the church, are already in fear of passing cars. Worse is to come — when buses are parked astern of them, they will be hidden from view. How soon before a taxi driver has his door — or worse — struck off? Crazy to choose this two-lane road to do the job of the four-lane square!
The county council should stop work on Bedford Square directly, and modify the plan to give back the 'taxi-lane' in the square; and increase the size of the access to the town hall.
The town council valiantly trying to increase usage of this noble building, the West Devon and County councils busy blocking off access!

ON a recent Sunday morning, traffic wardens were busy in Tavistock putting parking tickets on the cars of unsuspecting churchgoers attending morning service.
Is this profligate authority so strapped for cash that it must stoop to this new blow?
If this be the case, then we, the taxpayers, have every right to question the waste of money connected with the unpopular vandalism of our famous old square.
Furthermore, we need to know how many council employees use the vast Kilworthy Park car park on a daily basis and how much if anything do they contribute to the cost of parking there.
