A MAJOR refurbishment of Okehampton Post Office is planned after the business was sold into new hands for an undisclosed fee. Former sub-postmaster Roger McClean, who had owned the business since 1997, has sold it through Exeter firm Christie and Co and is now pursuing other interests. Allenton Fisher from Newark in Nottinghamshire, has purchased the new 20-year lease on the town?s post office. He previously owned a large post office in Lincolnshire but was keen to move to Devon. Okehampton post office is busy and profitable with a high remuneration plus income from a range of retail lines and National Lottery tickets. Paul Heather of Christie and Co, said the sale was ?great news for the people of Okehampton? as the new owner had plans for a major refurbishment. He added: ?The post office sector continues to benefit from moves to modernise the network. Such was the demand for post offices that Christie and Co sold 57% more post offices in the ten months to the end of October 2005 compared with the same period the previous year.?
