THE organisers of a huge fundraiser taking place in Tavistock next spring say they are delighted at the prompt response of a town business to the big challenge. The Bedford Mile, a race to raise money for a new all weather running track at Tavistock College, will take place on April 1 ? and Tavistock Post Office is the first local business to throw its cap into the ring and help support the big event. Owner Ravi Jhangiani has offered to provide bottled water for the race, which organisers hope will attract hundreds of runners. Mr Jhangiani said: ?We always like to get involved with what?s going on locally, we like to support local charities. ?It?s the old story, we are part of the community, we are not just here to take; we like to give something back.? Store manager Mary Matthews said she was pleased the store was able to help. ?Hopefully, I might even be able to persuade some of the staff to run as well!? she said. Colin Eves, principal at Tavistock College, said: ?I am absolutely delighted the post office is supporting the Bedford Mile in this way ? it?s a wonderful response and it would be great if other local businesses were encouraged to get involved in such a fantastic community event.? The Bedford Mile will take place on April 1 ? it is hoped at least 1,000 people will take part in the race between Bedford Square and Drake?s Statue, with sponsorship money going towards the £300,000 campaign to build the new running track.
