WE would like to thank your reporter, Alison Stephenson, for her article on the Wharf's new live performance broadcasts following her visit to see the musical Billy Elliot. I believe I may have intimated that we couldn't get a grant for the conversion to digital, but for the record, we did get a very generous grant from the Tavistock Town Council which enabled us to seriously reduce our carbon footprint by converting the stage lighting to LED lights, and we are equally grateful to the West Devon Borough Council for our grant for rent and rates relief which is very instrumental in keeping the Wharf afloat as a Community Arts Centre. The total cost of converting to digital was so high, it was a house re-mortgage as well, but having seen the transmissions so far, and the fact that it adds so many more facets to the Wharf's music facilities, we think it was worth it. Your reporter mentioned that The Wharf is now able to put on so many types of musical performances. But no end of technical endeavour would let us re-create the acoustics, for example, of St Eustachius' Church. I recall seeing a performance of Handel's Messiah for choir, organ and full orchestra at St George's Chapel in Windsor, and that was an unbeatable performance which only the ambience and grand acoustics of a church such as St. Eustachius can do. For the same reason, Tavistock Town Hall – whose ambience and sheer majesty which reminds me of the famous Guild Hall in London — provides an unbeatable environment for acoustic and semi-acoustic performances — complementing the music facilities here in Tavistock.
