A SAILOR from Tavistock is involved in the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight, which disappeared on March 8. Petty Officer Hadleigh Hannington-Daley is on Royal Navy survey ship, HMS Echo, which was redeployed to assist in the search for the missing airliner. The Plymouth based vessel had been carrying out survey work in the Middle East before receiving instructions to join the international search effort in the Southern Indian Ocean. Raised in Wales, PO Daley moved to Tavistock in 2007 to be with his wife, Tavistock community safety officer Louisa, and his step-children Maddie and Archie Wall. He joined the Royal Navy in 1999. Now part of the Logistics team onboard HMS Echo, the 34 year old said: 'Being away from home and family is always hard and I'm aware things must be even harder for my wife juggling the rigours of family life in my absence. 'I consider myself very lucky to be in a job that gives me satisfaction, an opportunity to help others and ultimately make a positive difference. 'My main role onboard is Petty Officer Logistician in charge of procurement, stores and dispatches. I provide whole ship support, ensuring the necessary supplies are always available at short notice — something that was tested successfully by our brief 12 hour stop in the Maldives before commencing transit to the search area. 'This mission is very important to the relatives of those onboard MH370 and I hope we can succeed in finding answers.' HMS Echo was mid-way through an 18-month deployment when she was re-tasked, by that time she had visited Bahrain, Dubai, Oman, the Seychelles and the Maldives. After 60 consecutive days at sea, HMS Echo is likely to call into an Australian port to replenish supplies before resuming search and recovery patrols in the Indian Ocean.
