JOB hunters in Tavistock took full advantage of a helping hand in finding employment this month at a special 'work club' event held at the town's library.

The free event offered help with improving employment opportunities through training, volunteering, and reconsidering career goals, as well as advice on the financial implications of being unemployed. It also gave people the chance to meet others looking for work, build new contacts and share experiences.

Fred Jenkins of Next Step, a government service helping adults get the advice they need for future skills, careers, work and life choices, said the event was very useful.

He said: 'It brought together so many agencies; it was good to be able to exchange information about the services we all provide and swap ideas. I thought it was a really successful day.'

Helen Cooper, Devon County Council's library manager for Tavistock, said: 'It was fantastic to see the library being used to provide practical help to the local community during these difficult times.'

Help for job seekers continues in the town with regular 'work club' sessions taking place every Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm. These weekly meetings, which are run by the county council in partnership with the Rotary Club of Tavistock, Job Centre Plus, and Tavistock Town Council,  offer advice on CV writing, interview techniques and assistance with online applications forms, as well as providing computer access in order to search for vacancies, complete online tutorials and to learn basic IT skills.

Rachel Smith, one of the local residents who has benefited from the scheme, said: 'The "work club" was so helpful for me when I moved back to Tavistock and was looking for work.

'It was great to have experienced professionals from all backgrounds take the time to look at my CV and covering letters to ensure I was on the right track to making a good first impression to potential employers.

'Meeting people in a similar situation and having the support of the "work club" team really boosted my confidence and motivation and helped me land an events co-ordinator role at the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

'I would suggest to anyone to go along and meet the friendly bunch to see how they can help.'

Cllr Roger Croad, Devon County Council cabinet member with responsibility for the library service, said: 'Don't worry if you missed this special "work club" event, the weekly sessions are still available, and I would urge anyone looking for a job to go along and take advantage of the free advice on the best route back into employment.'
