JAPANESE students were welcomed to Tavistock last Monday with a traditional pasty lunch in the town hall. A total of 18 Japanese students and two teachers from Momijigawa Senior High School in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, congregated at Tavistock Town Hall for an event hosted by the town council. The students have come to Tavistock as part of an annual exchange between their school and Tavistock Community College. They have taken part in lessons at the college, gone horse-riding, and even went on the school's climbing wall. Last Monday, during the year 11 assembly, Tavistock College principal, Colin Eves, gave an address in Japanese which greatly impressed the Japanese students and teachers. All 18 students are staying with Tavistock College students who went to Japan last November. This is the largest Japan and UK school exchange throughout Britain. Crispin Chambers, who teaches Japanese at the college, said: 'It's a wonderful opportunity to share our culture. 'They love the tradition, the beauty of Dartmoor and the marvellous reception given by the host families.'
